SONG FACTS 2

  • Rick Springfield’s one and only #1 hit, Jessie’s Girl, was written about a classmates girlfriend. The classmates actual name was Gary, but, Springfield explains, “Gary didn’t sing very well” so he changed the name to Jessie.

  • Kathleen Hanna, the lead singer of the group Bikini Kill, gave Kurt Cobain the idea for the title of his biggest hit when she spray painted "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on his bedroom wall after a night of drinking.

  • The Eagles shocked the world when, first, winning the 1977 Grammy for record of the Year with Hotel California over the heavily favored Debby Boone smash You Light Up My Life, and secondly, not having anyone present at the show to accept the award, causing the bewildered host, Andy Williams, to look at the envelope a second time to make sure he had read it correctly. The band did not show up to accept the award because Don Henley did not believe in contests.

  • Rolling in the Deep is the first top ten hit for British singer Adele from her second album, 21. On this revenge song, Adele lays into a former boyfriend. "It's me making a bit of a statement," she told Q Magazine. "People will hear it and go, Wow, she ain't mucking around." Like her first album, 19, the 21 title refers to Adele's age at the time the songs were written.

  • According to Billboard magazine, The Band Perry chart topper When I Die Young was the fifth song with "die," or a form of the word, in its title to reach #1 on the country chart. The previous four were:
1955, "Live Fast, Love Hard, Die Young," Faron Young.
1971, "The Year That Clayton Delaney Died," Tom T. Hall.
1994, "Live Until I Die," Clay Walker.
2004, "Live Like You Were Dying," Tim McGraw.
