My brother texted me after the halftime show to say "You know your getting old when you never heard of Bruno Mars." True enough my brother is in his mid fifties and many of today's pop artists are probably unfamiliar to him but I'll give him this - at least he knows how to text. That did bring up an interesting point though. I'm sure when the Super Bowl featured artists like Tom Petty, Aerosmith and the Stones many of the 30 and under crowd were questioning why - or who are they? Now that more recent Bowls have showcased current artists like the Black Eyed Peas and Bruno Mars many of the Baby Boomers are the ones saying "Who?"
Which brings up an interesting point. As Mobile DJs we are somewhat required to know who all of these artists are. When we are at an office party and someone with a little gray in their temple and belly over their belt approaches us and asks us what do we have from Frampton we're expected to know that he is talking about Peter Frampton, that his iconic hit album was Frampton Comes Alive in 1976 and what the top cuts from that record album were (yes it was only available on vinyl or an eight track back then). A week later if we happen to be at a school dance and the students excitedly rush up to us asking if we have The Fox, we know that they are referring to What Does the Fox Say, the Youtube viral sensation from a Norwegian duo called Ylvis. A failure to comprehend either one of those situations gives one the impression we're not qualified for the job that we are doing. It's just another one of those hidden requirements not thought of when people think of the necessities to do our job at a high level - and I'm sure there are many nuances to your job that the general public does not realize as well.
Yep there is more to being a DJ than just cueing up a song and pushing play.
As for the game itself one hoped instantly that the first play [a mis-communication between the Broncos center and quarterback which resulted in a two point safety for the Seahawks] was an aberration rather than a sign of things to come. It wasn't though and, unless you were a Seahawks fan, the game was a dud. Which brings me another point: I found the commercials, which are always highly anticipated, a dud as well. While speaking with friends it sounds as if they felt the same way. But I have to wonder, if the game had been more entertaining would we have viewed the commercials differently?
And finally, I never heard of Renee Fleming before, but she brought down the house singing The Star Spangle Banner. I say sign her up to an annual contract, or at least bring her back again!
Until next time
