That the toast can be one of the key moments to a wedding. Sincere toasts can pull your guests in and can almost make them"feel the love" which will inspire them and help transition into a great celebration.
Here are some Toasting Tips for your Best Man, Maid/Matron of Honor and anyone else that will be holding the live mic:
DO'S
- Hold the microphone close to your chin
- Open with who you are - but avoid the cliché “for those of you who don’t know me” (how about “Hi, my name is Susie and I’m happy to be Betsy’s Maid of Honor today”) - and how you know the bride or groom.
- A short, funny story is good
- Talk about what you've observed about their happiness since meeting
- Share a great story about when you knew they were The One for each other
- Wish them a lifetime of happiness together and conclude with “Now let’s all raise our glass . . .”
DONT'S
- Don’t try to punk the bride or groom and tell embarrassing stories (this is a celebration, not a roast)
- Don’t tell inside jokes (makes the guests feel if they are not needed there)
- Don’t mention ex’s (tacky)
- Don’t get hammered before dinner (you’ll regret this the following days for more reasons than one).
- Don’t forget to conclude with “Let’s all raise our glass . . .”
- Don’t forget to hold the microphone close to your chin
